Staircase

The staircase is the only piece of furniture you walk over every day. We design stairs as sculptures that connect floors, bring in light and give art a wall ten metres high.

A staircase begins with the structure: floating, curved, with a closed string or an open spine. Our architects calculate and draw; cabinetmakers and steel fabricators from our network build. Material follows the architecture: solid oak or walnut in a townhouse, natural stone or steel in a new build, a combination when the property asks for it.

The balustrade is the signature: forged steel, brass balusters, glass without clamps or an upholstered handrail. Lighting in the treads or along the wall makes the staircase a light object in the evening. In existing stairwells we restore the original stairs and add a void or roof light.

The stair wall is the largest wall in the house. An artist from our network creates a fresco, a textile work or a relief for it that is seen differently on every floor.

03

Light on the treads

Frequently asked questions

Staircase

Often yes. We measure, prefabricate the stairs and install them in a few days. For a new position we examine the structure.

All balustrades comply with the building code. Glass, brass balusters and closed strings are child-safe; we design the detailing so the design stays pure.

In listed buildings we restore the original stairs and carefully add lighting or a void, in consultation with the heritage authority.
